Project Activities

Data Collection

Field and laboratory data collection form a key part of this project. Measurements of rainfall, water levels, river discharge, flood extent, and mangrove characteristics are gathered across key locations using a combination of low-cost sensors, with some systems capable of providing real-time data.

Controlled laboratory experiments are also being conducted, focusing on the physical modelling of mangrove systems. Building on initial studies of different species, ongoing work aims to explore how the different mangrove characteristics influence flow behaviour. This helps improve how these ecosystems are represented in models and supports a better understanding of their role in flood mitigation.

Focus Area for Data Collection

Explore the South Oropouche area on the west coast of Trinidad, which is the focus of the data collection.

Modelling

The collected data is used to develop numerical models that simulate flooding under a range of scenarios, including extreme weather and changing climate conditions. This involves representing processes from rainfall and runoff to river and floodplain flow, and coastal water level interactions.

Inland flooding processes are modelled and combined with coastal conditions to capture compound flooding dynamics. These models are used to quantify flood risk, explore potential future impacts, and assess the effectiveness of Nature-Based Solutions in reducing flooding.

Watershed Modelling

Modelling the watershed will identify rainfall and runoff to input into flood modelling.

Stakeholder Activities

Community engagement is central to the INFLUENCE project. We are dedicated to fostering two-way dialogue with the public, ensuring our findings resonate beyond the academic and professional sphere. This will be executed through a diverse array of public initiatives, including workshops, an art competition, and an educational video series.
